WOW...this was an awesome movie. Excellent story and acting as well. This drew me in from the first scene and it got better all the way to the end. Who knew that the pivotal scene in the movie would be the extraordinary performance on the drum solo!! I'm not sure why it didn't get Best Picture, but it certainly earned an Oscar from me.

Both actors carried the plot forward in a clear and purposeful manner. Excellent energy between student and teacher.

The ending said it all when it ended without further scenes. You could just imagine how this young drummer went onto being the best drummer of them all.

Well done, entertaining and the time just flew by watching this excellent story. 
If anybody out there has a passion for something, don't let anybody else take it away from you or push you to the edge, no matter what. If you're good at something, do it. There a lot of people out there who will provoke you endlessly and make your blood boil, so do not give them that benefit. This film made me believe in that fact once more, and took my breath away. Anybody with a dream, an intention, a vision of their future, has to see this motion picture event!!!! This is not a musical, this is not just a movie about drumming, DO NOT walk in with that misconception. WHIPLASH is a both electrifying and provocative well-paced drama that asks "what is the true definition of motivation" or as the AFI see it "What is the line between mentor and monster?". I urge you to check it out!!!!! If you're not at the edge of your seat while watching this once-in-a-lifetime masterpiece, something is wrong with you!!

Oh man. I just saw Whiplash and I am still reeling. I can't remember ever having such an electrifying experience watching a movie (I swear I wrote that before finding the poster on the left with the word "ELECTRIFYING" in all caps). I was riveted, on the edge of my seat strung up with excitement by this thing. It'll have you on your toes, sometimes shaking with anxiety and other times bursting with anger and then joyously applauding at the end. Whiplash indeed.

Maybe it's because I had a taste for how nasty it was going to get, but I was just wiggling with anxiety, half anticipating/half dreading when the shoe would drop. And once it does for the first time you just never know when it's going to hit again. JK Simmon's performance is just gnarly and intense. He plays a man with a single-minded, unbending vision: create truly great jazz musicians, no matter the cost. For him, this means pushing them to the brink of their own destruction. The ends justify the means. He makes the tiger mom look like a cuddly kitten. At one point he pits three drummers against each other for hours on end. He dismisses the rest of the band while the three battle it out one after another and you can see Fletcher is in his element, relishing the opportunity to just dig in, give in to his rage, and make them suffer it out. Andrew plays until his hands are bleeding. This movie has more sweat and blood-stained drum sets then a Tool concert.

Writer/Director Damian Chazelle (who just turned 30) reportedly based the movie on his own experience dealing with an overbearing band teacher in high school. I did band all through school and even had a teacher that had some mildly-similar elements. (Also, did I mention the director completed this movie by the time he was 29?!? So impressive.) Fletcher's character is certainly extreme, with some complaining that it is unrealistically so, but it is brilliantly carried out. Yeah, we know that life as a jazz student isn't' exactly like this - so what? Keep watch for when he takes off his jacket, usually a sign he's doing what he thinks is his most important work. Miles Teller's performance of Andrew show's great range as well as his character transitions from a young hopeful pup to a cocky upstart, then a broken down hound dog and finally an experienced wolf that, although not a master, has a couple of lessons under his belt. Now that he's been through the first few bumps he's more dedicated then ever.

The movie really asks two questions: What does it really take to achieve greatness? And then the follow up, is it worth it? The final act is exhilarating, jump-out-of-your-seat kind of stuff. I do like jazz, especially the type in this movie. But I think even if you know nothing and care nothing for jazz, the performances, the visuals, the editing, and the resulting energy and dynamics of the final scenes will get anyone going. Even as you see the relationship between Andrew and Fletcher change and then change again during an extended musical sequence, you never know right till the last moment how it's going to end and what it means. And even then the movie still leaves it up to the viewer's interpretation. Maybe the answers that you think the movie is giving to those questions says more about you then about the movie. 
There are many reasons to dislike this movie. It shows a teenager being psychologically and physically abused. It shows art being portrayed as something painful. It shows someone abusing his authority. It shows the collapse of a romantic relationship, causing deeply hurt feelings. The story in general comes off as being contrived. Yet, this movie is great. It is highly entertaining, the reason being its theme: what is an artist supposed to do to satisfy his quest for perfection? In this case, the metaphor for perfection is Buddy Rich, who was a famous American jazz drummer. In this movie, Rich's work is used as a standard for artistic perfection, in this case, artistic expression through the playing of percussion instruments. The structure of the plot is simple: a music teacher, Fletcher, wants to bring out the brilliance of his student, Andrew. He believes that the best way to accomplish this through humiliation which will test the level of the student's commitment to achieving greatness and perfection. The student becomes the tool through which the teacher can vicariously achieve perfection. For this story is about the teacher. He is the principal character, the one around whom the action takes place. The teacher is a metaphor for all the artists in the world who are striving for something that they themselves cannot achieve, and so seek it out in others. To bring it out is the challenge, and that generates conflict, as the teacher must first break down the student's resistance, which is a painful and risky process. Painful because it involves elements of abuse; risky because he may lose the student. The acting is superb. J. K. Simmons's gives a terrifically powerful performance as the teacher, Fletcher, and Miles Teller gives a tremendous performance as the student, Andrew. The story moves at a brisk pace and achieves moments of extreme intensity that alone make the movie worth watching. True, the movie includes brief but graphic scenes of physical violence perpetrated against a teenager, but this takes place within the context of an extremely emotional and volatile relationship which drives the story, and without which the story may lose some of it strength. 
Before I start, I'd like to say I am a musician and I do appreciate jazz. That being said, I do like the music in this film. But that's about the only thing I did like.

The story is very original, but ridiculously unrealistic and far-fetched. Honestly, if a college professor verbally, and even more importantly, PHYSICALLY abused students, they would be fired at the snap of a finger. Tenured or not, their career would be over.

The acting is extremely good. J.K. Simmons did a very good job. But the energy was badly misplaced. Terrence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons) is a JAZZ TEACHER AND CONDUCTOR! NOT A MARINE DRILL SERGEANT! There is no need for that amount of intensity, no matter how prestigious the school may be.

And honestly, who would break up with a great, beautiful girl to focus on trying to impress an abusive teacher? I wouldn't. It's just dumb.

My biggest problem with this film is the car crash scene. He got t-boned by an 18 wheeler and overturned. He should have been concussed and bones should have been broken. Instead, he's fine and decides to go perform. Stupid.

At the end, Neimann is kicked out of school and Fletcher is out of a job, but for some reason, even with all that bad blood, they decided to get together and perform, which was just a setup by Fletcher to humiliate and embarrass Neimann. Highly unlikely. But then he kicks ass on drums and impresses Fletcher? That's stupid, too! IT VALIDATES ALL OF THE ABUSE FLETCHER PERPETRATED IN THE FIRST PLACE! It just ends with such a horrible message.

It's a good film, just not my taste. Well acted, but everything about it's intensity is badly misplaced.

ENJOY WATCHING THIS MOVIE GUYS Computer graphics has reached the point where talented animators can produce any image or action on the screen that they can imagine. The imagination of Sing's creators seems boundless, sustaining a hectic pace of gleeful inventiveness that never lets up. There is stuff you glimpse out of the corner of your eye that must have taken someone weeks of work to create, that might even be good enough for a film of its own, but its gone in less than a second. The story line is an old one, a bunch of amateurs putting on a performance, but the energy of the animation and the cleverly thought out bevy of performers, who all share a deep love of music, make it fresh and engaging. How many really new plots are there, after all? If going to a movie that is just pure fun is something your might be ashamed of, this film is not for you. But if you could stand two hours of joyful entertainment, see Sing,  "In a city of humanoid animals, a hustling theater impresario's attempt to save his theater with a singing competition becomes grander than he anticipates even as its finalists' find that their lives will never be the same." This was a movie that Jay and Nick (The Autistic Reviewers) had never really planned on seeing. But, at the last second it started receiving a lot of positive feedback and loads of good comments, and it had an amazing voice cast, so why not? Despite the fact that this movie is a kids movie, and us being 26 years old we have moved way past those kiddie movies. The good news is the movie had a very adult message behind it and it was so realistic on so many levels. While the annoying fart and burping jokes are meant to be for kids, we were both able to look beyond that and see the realistic struggle in Theater Showbiz. The pain, the sweat, the lies, the time and the money to do this sort of thing would be just so unbearable to go through. So the movie did an excellent job at achieving this message. The voice cast are also incredible. The best singers were Reese Withspoon, Seth Macfarlane (surprisingly) and Taron Egerton. The only complaint we would have about the songs is that they were cut all the time. Every single time you are hearing the actors sing it cuts it short just as you are getting into it! Apart from all this, despite never going to the movies to see little kids movies this one was an exception. We both thoroughly enjoyed it. Take your (annoying) kids and go and see this movie. It's not perfect, but it's definitely not disappointing!  I read some other reviews before posting my own, especially the ones that are rated less than 5 stars. I just have to say that Sing is a good movie that does not tie into any racial stereotypes nor does it enforce any kind of agenda. So those that believe that there are some sort of hidden message to Sing, is dead wrong. The plot is a bit interesting only because without the singing competition there is no way to connect the characters. But that is the thing, each character that is represented is going through something different that wants them to be there. It is exactly like Buster Moon says "Do not Let Fear Stop You from Doing the Thing You Love Most" I found myself connecting to each of the characters emotionally, because i know that we have all been there at some point in our lives. The Adult Themes are much needed in Sing, because without them it would have just been another cheesy, second rate, kids film with no depth. You got: - a tired, overworked, and under-appreciated pig mom, with 12 piglet children, who gave up on her dreams, while her husband is completely oblivious to her.  - A moody porcupine teenager who was selected over her boyfriend which she finds out later that is a complete jerk when he was "cheating." OK so the definition of cheating is weak, but he is caught singing with another girl in her apartment.  - The "swift and conniving" mouse guy who is only in it for the money, trying to hustle mobsters, but fails. All while living on his own standards. - An Elephant teenager who is just too scared and shy to get over her insecurities to sing in front of others, especially when she has the family supporting her. For example, I could say that it's very formulaic in its narrative and character arcs. The themes are also very derivative of themes that other films have also examined. Nothing about the film is entirely surprising. However, it says something about the quality of the execution that despite how predictable it is, it's still able to work wonders. The animation is dazzling and beautiful and the characters are really written with a lot of care. Although the story itself is very derivative, having these types of characters (of Polynesian roots) in the forefront is definitely something original and I do hope that Disney, even when creating films that hit the same beats and follow the same formula, can still create characters that are different in that way.  This movie was...pretty good. Its not worthy of an 8.2 average user rating (as of the time of writing this review) though. I don't wanna spoil anything for anyone who hasn't seen the movie yet so I won't go into much detail. First, let me say I don't hate this movie. On a technical level this film is truly remarkable. The animation is gorgeous and some aspects of it are even photorealistic. Dwayne Johnson's voice fits Maui's character very well, and all the other voice actors were good too. Some ideas were really cool like how the water is a character and Maui's tattoos can tell stories. Some of the songs weren't bad, either. Except for that obvious "Let It Go" ripoff. My big problem with the movie is its story. Its way too formulaic. I could predict pretty much every major plot point as the film unfolded. If you've ever seen a Disney movie, you know what's going to happen. A character loses something dear to them but it is conveniently restored later. An antagonist has a quirky song number that isn't as catchy or majestic as ones sung by the main characters. There's the quirky sidekick that serves no purpose to the plot besides being useful in one brief moment of one scene. Every character with some flawed personality trait is perfectly resolved. At one point I thought to myself "we're overdue for a musical number, aren't we?" and literally 10 seconds after I thought that, a musical number started. I could go on about various aspects that Yes, anyone who's seen the movie will tell you its somewhat self-aware, but recognizing the issue does not change the fact that it still suffers from it.  If you wanna see it, feel free to, but don't expect anyone over age 12 to have their mind blown. Yes the animation is amazing and the Polynesian setting is unique for Disney, but the story is one we've seen dozens of times before. 6.5/10  As a Polynesian, there are principles and values that are central to our culture that for many years I've tried to share with anyone I meet. Actually many people from Hawaii and the Pacific get this, even non-Polys :-). This story by Disney really brought many of those values out to the larger screen, to a larger audience, and I didn't realize seeing it this way would affect me so... deeply. When baby Moana first stepped onto that beach in the early part of the movie... flower in her hair, sun kissed skin... "the feels" are an understatement. My sister and I shed a few tears as if we were seeing a reflection of our own childhood on a beach in Hawaii -- the happiness, the curiosity, the innocence,the sea. Yeah, the feels happened and it was GREAT. The story of the Polynesians voyaging across the Pacific; the sense of ohana and family; how important coconuts are to island life; how the island provides all you need; sense of duty to go out and seek solutions and bring them home; chickens and pigs all over the place (!); the beautiful and varied languages; the dancing; the art and craft of the tapestries (tapa/kapa cloth) and other designs; the canoe designs; the laughing; the relationship with the ocean.... these are all real things we as Pacific Islanders feel in a beautiful, unique life. One great example of authenticity: I also loved that instead of handshakes or just hugs as a greeting in the movie, Disney used the honi, a traditional Polynesian greeting which I recommend to everyone! The honi is a Polynesian greeting in which two people greet each other by pressing noses and inhaling at the same time. This is a very special as it represents the exchange of ha--the breath of life, and mana--spiritual power between two people. This was a well done movie. Breathtakingly beautiful... and actually not so far off from reality (anyone who's been to Tahiti or Samoa will get it). Disney deserves credit for bringing so much joy and pride to a people that are often associated with tikis and grass skirts...
